Notes from the author

I lost it all
many times
so you
don't have to.

Breaking a pattern that has lived inside a person for nearly thirty years is one of the hardest things any human being can attempt. For me, poker wasn't just a habit; it became the lens through which I saw everything. It was the system that shaped my decisions, my emotions, my identity. And that system dragged me through homelessness, hunger, cold, heat, incarceration, scamming people, losing friends, destroying relationships, hurting my family, and ultimately hurting myself.

When a behavior becomes part of your identity — your routine, your emotional wiring, your false sense of comfort — it stops being "just a game." It becomes a home. A toxic home, yes, but a familiar one. And familiarity is powerful. It keeps you trapped even when you know it's killing you.

For three decades, that cycle buried itself into every corner of my life. Most people never imagine they can escape something like that because they're not just fighting the game — they're fighting the emotional highs, the illusions, the shame, the guilt, the regret, and the damage they've caused. I lived in that fog for years.

But here's the truth I eventually discovered: breaking that cycle is possible. Not theoretically. Not motivationally. Actually possible. After all the pain, all the relapses, all the years lost, I found a secret that allowed me to rewrite everything.

It wasn't a straight line. It was a process — long, messy, full of relapses. For years, I kept falling back into the same pattern over and over, so don't be disappointed when that happens. That is part of the process through recovery. Even in the darkest moments, there was something in the back of my mind pushing me in the direction of that secret. A tiny voice that kept whispering that something about this whole poker life was nonsense. That something didn't add up. That I wasn't meant to die inside this cycle.

At the same time, I was drowning in shame, sorrow, and pain. My heart hurt. My brain hurt. My soul hurt. I was exhausted from asking myself "why" over and over again. Why me? Why can't I stop? Why do I keep destroying everything? Why do I keep hurting the people I love?

And here's what I want you to understand: don't waste too much time in the "why." You can look for answers, and sometimes you'll find pieces of truth. But often, the answers you think you want won't be the answers you actually need. The "why" can keep you stuck in a fog of blame, guilt, and confusion.

The first real step is understanding this: some people get exposed to gambling — poker, slots, sports betting, darts, whatever — and they walk away untouched. Others get exposed and fall into a lifelong addiction. And if you're one of the people who got hooked, it's not your fault. You're not weak. You're not broken. You're not stupid. You're not morally defective.

You are sick.

And society doesn't understand that. They say things like, "If you're losing too much money, just stop going to the casino." As if it were that simple. As if addiction listens to logic. As if the brain cares about common sense when it's wired into a cycle.

The truth is, I had to recognize that I was sick. That something had taken control of my brain, my body, my soul, my heart. I wasn't choosing to destroy my life — I was being pulled by something I couldn't control. And in that sickness, I was capable of anything. I would cheat. I would scam. I would lie. I would sneak. I would manipulate. I would do whatever it took to feed the addiction.

And that's when the first real shift happened.

My first move toward recovery — the first step toward the secret — was admitting that I was sick. Sick people need medicine. Sick people need treatment. Sick people need a cure.

And my medicine… was the secret I eventually discovered.

A secret I want to share with you.

Once that secret came into the light, everything changed. That was the moment my real recovery journey began. That was the moment I stopped being a prisoner of the cycle and started becoming the person I was always meant to be.
